The Urban Gardener Lecture Series - 2008


The Norfolk Foundation The Fred Heutte Center is pleased to continue its Urban Gardener Lecture Series for 2008. The series continues to be funded by a generous grant from The Norfolk Foundation.

We have gathered a variety of speakers who will provide expertise in different gardening-related fields. The series is geared for beginners and specialists. While the program is free for members of the Friends of Fred Heutte Foundation and members of the Master Gardeners Program, the cost for non-members is $ 5.00 per person. Some lectures require the pre-payment of materials fees. All lectures will be held at the center.



LANDSCAPE DESIGN & WATER QUALITY



Laurie Fox
Horticulture Associate
Virginia Tech Hampton Roads Agricultural Research & Extension Center (AREC)
Wednesday, June 25th, 7:00 PM

Laurie Fox, co-author of the FHC best seller BEST PLANTS FOR HAMPTON ROADS, joins us to kick-off the summer lecture series with a tour of a local residential landscape and a discussion of the ways it is water wise.

Laurie holds her masters degree in horticulture from North Carolina State University with emphasis in landscape design, ornamental plant production, and weed science. She served three years as a North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service County Agent and a weed scientist for Virginia Tech at the Hampton Roads AREC. She is currently working in the areas of phytoremediation, aquatic plant production and management, and water quality.

Billi Parus returns to share her creative cooking-with-herbs skills. Billi is a Virginia Beach Master Gardener, Life member of the Herb Society of America, a member of the British Herb Society, as well as owner of Lavender Hill House, an Internet gift basket business. She lives in Virginia Beach where she and her husband grow over 200 varieties of herbs, including 8 registered National Collections. Billi travels the country, teaching about cooking with herbs.

WILLIAMSBURG APPLE CONES

This unique arrangement can be used as a centerpiece, in an entry hallway or on a buffet. Best of all, it fits any occasion from a spring tea to a Christmas buffet, by simply varying the materials used. Think lemons and limes for spring and summer and mini pumpkins and gourds for fall and Thanksgiving. No talent is necessary and the cone is yours to reuse year after year! Elizabeth Meska is the owner of Lifestyles by Elizabeth, where her passion for cuisine, gardening, landscape and décor assists and enriches the lives of others. Elizabeth majored in biology and holds landscape and horticulture certifications. She has spent over 20 years managing her own catering business, working as an Adult Education program planner, educator, trainer, and workshop facilitator. She is a Norfolk Master Gardener, serves on the board of the Fred Heutte Center, and volunteers time and service to various community based organizations. WILLIAMSBURG STYLE WREATH

This program has become a classic! Our "famous" Williamsburg Style Wreath decorates the Heutte Center during the December holidays and we have more requests for this program than any other. The beautiful wreath is handmade using various cedars and evergreens and is very aromatic! Bright clusters of fresh fruit and bright red ribbon add a classical and elegant decorative addition to your holiday doorway. Participants should bring garden gloves, cutting shears, and a heavy duty staple gun if they have them. The class is free for Friends of Fred Heutte Foundation members and Master Gardeners and $ 5.00 for non-members. Pre-registration and pre-payment of all fees are required. Cost of materials is $35.00 per person.
