The Urban Gardener Lecture Series - 2006


The Norfolk Foundation The Fred Heutte Center is pleased to continue its Urban Gardener Lecture Series for 2006. The series continues to be funded by a generous grant from The Norfolk Foundation.

We have gathered a variety of speakers who will provide expertise in different gardening-related fields. The series is geared for beginners and specialists. While the program is free for members of the Friends of Fred Heutte Foundation and members of the Master Gardeners Program, the cost for non-members is $ 5.00 per person. Some lectures require the pre-payment of materials fees. All lectures will be held at the center.



MAKE & TAKE: Strawberry Jar Herb Garden

Wednesday, June 14th, 7:00 PM

Join Elizabeth Meska, a master gardener, for a fun, fragrant, and productive evening! Learn about growing herbs, and their uses in your kitchen, as you create your very own "herbal pantry" to grow on your doorstep or deck. The instructor will provide you with the best combinations and varieties of herbs for your container, as well as lots of ideas and recipes to incorporate them into your cooking. Leave with your own herb garden, for yourself, or to use as a terrific gift!

THE HERBAL PANTRY

This lecture will show you how to create the main food items you need in your "herbal pantry". Billi will demonstrate how to make herbal pesto, vinegar, mayonnaise, butter, and cheese....all elements used to enhance our everyday meals. You will receive recipes and have a sampling of the foods she demonstrates.

Billi Parus is a Virginia Beach Master Gardener, Life member of the Herb Society of America, a member of the British Herb Society, as well as owner of Lavender Hill House, an internet gift basket business. She lives in Virginia Beach where she and her husband grow over 200 varieties of herbs, including 8 registered National Collections. Billi goes all over the country teaching cooking with herbs.

TURFGRASS MANAGEMENT & CARE

Jim Lachowicz

At this lecture by Jim Lachowicz, a Master Gardener and Turf Specialist, you will learn about Turf management (or lawn care) in the Tidewater area. This class will cover everything you want to know about maintaining a green, healthy, and weed free, lush lawn while protecting our precious environment, all the while saving you lots of money and time! You will learn about the importance of timing during maintenance programs which involve fertilization and herbicide application, among others. Jim will discuss the five turfgrasses which grow in this area, as well as all aspects of maintaining them.

FERNS

Jim tells us that he's looking forward to getting our participants psyched about ferns! And we look forward to his lecture as we've added many to our shade gardens with intentions of adding more down the road. Our ostrich ferns look great this year! Jim is very familiar with gardening on the Peninsula since he gardened at home in Norfolk at a young age. He is now the Horticulture and Natural Resources Agent for York County and serves the home enthusiast as well as the professional horticulturist/nurseryman. Under Jim's guidance over 125 master gardener volunteers provide a very effective delivery system for quality educational and informative programs.

MAKE & TAKE: Container Gardening - Hypertufa

Vickie is a Norfolk Master Gardener (class of '97) and the Volunteer Coordinator for the City of Norfolk's Fall "Arbor Day Tree Distribution" and Spring seeding projects. Vickie's recent work involved supervising a team of adults with disabilities in plant propagation for Tanner's Creek Garden Center (110 LaValette Avenue in the Riverview Historic Business District in Norfolk!). This work gave her the opportunity to be one of the regular "experts" on WTAR 850AM radio with Pasquale on the "Ask the Expert" call-in show. Her past work includes the Education Department at Norfolk Botanical Garden and her own business caring for private gardens and estates.

A Horticultural Safari of the Virginia Zoo

"A Horticultural Safari of the Virginia Zoo" will lead guests through gardens ranging from the exotic to the traditional right here in Tidewater. Tour guide Marie Butler will present this slide program using examples of from the wild and wonderful collections of the Virginia Zoo. Design themes and plant selections in the Zoo gardens are not so very different from those you can use in your own backyard. except for the elephants.

Marie Butler is the Landscape Coordinator for the Virginia Zoological Park in Norfolk. Her horticultural studies at NC State University, teaching credentials in Japanese flower arranging, and 14 year association with the Master Gardeners of the Tidewater region, have blended her scientific, artistic, and practical skills. Awarded "2005 Horticulturist of the Year" by the Hampton Roads Nursery and Landscape Association, Marie Butler shares her enthusiasm, laughter, and fun in the garden with everyone.
