Arlington - " THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE FOR NOVEMBER 2010 AT DCA WAS ABOVE NORMAL. THE PAST NINE MONTHS HAVE SEEN TEMPERATURES AT LEAST 1.8F DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THE LAST TIME WHEN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURES WERE AT LEAST 1.8F ABOVE NORMAL FOR THIS LONG WAS AN 11-MONTH STRETCH FROM OCTOBER 1990 THROUGH AUGUST 1991. THEN MONTHLY TEMPERATURES FOR EACH MONTH AVERAGED OVER 2.0F ABOVE NORMAL. THE TEMPERATURE FAILED TO REACH 70F THIS MONTH FOR THE FIRST NOVEMBER SINCE 1997. THE TEMPERATURE REACHED FREEZING AT DCA FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS FALL ON NOVEMBER 29. THIS WAS THE FIRST FREEZING TEMPERATURE RECORDED AT DCA SINCE FEBRUARY 27. THIS 274-DAY STRETCH WITHOUT FREEZING TEMPERATURES WAS THE SECOND LONGEST EVER AT DCA. THE RECORD WAS A 275-DAY PERIOD FROM MARCH 14 TO DECEMBER 13 IN 1980. PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH WAS BELOW NORMAL. NEARLY TWO-THIRDS OF THE RAIN FOR THE MONTH FELL DURING A 24-HR PERIOD ON NOVEMBER 3RD-4TH. THE TRACE OF SLEET THAT WAS REPORTED ON THANKSGIVING DAY WAS THE FIRST RECORDED WINTRY PRECIPITATION SINCE MARCH 2ND. " - [ + - ] - Notes from NWS Sterling, VA
Bridgewater - " There was no measurable snow during the month. The precipitation for the year is now around 6 inches below normal. We are still getting big rains followed lenghty dry spells. This has been the pattern for 2010. " - [ - - ] - comments from Clayton
Chantilly - Russ sends these notes: " November was the ninth straight month in which the average temperature was above normal. Temperatures averaged 0.9° above normal and precipitation was 0.79" below normal. No records were set. However, our high temperature failed to get above 65° in November for the first time since I began keeping records. A thunderstorm occurred on the 17th. Dense fog was observed on the 15th & 22nd. *Please note, anemometer is currently partially obstructed from the Southeast " - [ + - ]
Dulles - from NWS Sterling (KLWX): " THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE FOR NOVEMBER 2010 AT DULLES WAS SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL...MARKING THE NINTH CONSECUTIVE MONTH OF ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES. THE LAST STRETCH WHEN AVERAGE TEMPERATURES WERE AT LEAST 0.9F ABOVE NORMAL FOR THIS LONG WAS THE 12-MONTH PERIOD OF MAY 2007 THROUGH APRIL 2008. THE TEMPERATURE FAILED TO REACH 70F THIS NOVEMBER FOR THE FIRST NOVEMBER SINCE 1997. FREEZING TEMPERATURES WERE RECORDED 16 DAYS THIS PAST MONTH...THE MOST DURING NOVEMBER SINCE THE 20 DAYS IN 2000. PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH WAS BELOW NORMAL. OVER ONE INCH OF RAINFALL WAS RECORDED ON BOTH THE 4TH AND 16TH. THERE WAS NO FROZEN PRECIPITATION REPORTED AT DULLES IN NOVEMBER. " - [ + - ]
Glen Allen - Lowell Koontz adds these notes: " November was warmer than average as the monthly mean temperature was 49.8°F, a +2.0°F mean temperature departure, and was much drier than average when compared to Ashland, Virginia records. The 1.85 inches of rain for November was a -1.33 inch departure when compared to the Ashland, VA average and the driest month since June 2010. It was also the driest November in the past three years. The maximum rainfall recorded in a day was 1.12 inches on the 4th which was 61 percent of the month's rainfall. Measurable precipitation occurred on only eight days and tied with September for the clearest month since August of 2008. The clear weather of November gave the highest daily average temperature range in the past three years of 23.1°F. The maximum temperature for November was 74°F on the 23rd. The lowest minimum was 26°F recorded on the 29th and there were six days with less than or equal to 32°F. The frost of the 7th killed the more sensitive plants and the frost of the 28th was a hard freeze killing most annual plants. The lowest dew point temperature was on the 27th at 0222 at 18.8°F. The maximum wind gust was only 25 mph from the WSW that occurred on the 24th at 1000 hrs. The highest barometer recorded for the month was 30.52 inches on the 29th which was the highest barometer reading since April of 2010 when it was 30.57 inches. The fall season was 3.7°F warmer when compared to Ashland's averages and the rainfall was +0.28 inches above the average. " - [ + - ]
